Jo Gwang-ik was a civil official and scholar of the Joseon period who passed the state examination in 1564 and was given an official post. In 1575, assistant governor of Gyeongsang-do Province Choe Hwang (1529-1603) included Jo Gwang-ik's younger brother, Jo Ho-ik (1545-1609), to the military register as there were instructions to find people who haven't been loyal to their military service duties. For multi-year mourning period reasons, Jo Ho-ik rejected and was exiled to Gangdong-hyeon. To meet his younger brother, Jo Gwang-ik received the duty of an assistant governor of Pyeongan-do Province in 1578, but died from a disease upon going there . After this, his body was moved to Obang-ri where the funeral was held, but the scholars and people of Gangdong-hyeon were impressed by their brotherly love that they visited to pay their condolences carrying soil. Part of the soil they carried was used to make the burial mound of the tomb and the rest is said to have been made into these two embankments. King Seonjo (r. 1567-1608) also commended them for their brotherly love by including it in ''Illustrated Conduct of the Three Bonds'' (Samganghaengsildo 三綱行實圖).
