국문

치성은 성벽 일부를 돌출시켜 적의 접근을 감시하거나 성벽이나 성문에 접근한 적을 공격하기 위해 만든 시설이다.

웅천읍성의 치성은 모두 6개로 모서리에 4개, 동쪽 성벽, 서쪽 성벽에 1개씩 있다.

동북쪽 치성은 체성부*에 덧대어 축조하였으며 길이 8.4m, 너비 5.5m 규모이다. 성을 쌓은 방식이 체성부에 비해 조잡하며, 상단부의 약 2.3m 부분은 후대에 개축한 것으로 보인다. 치성의 정상부와 주변에서 기와 조각이 발견되었는데 치성 위에 누각과 같은 건물을 지었던 것으로 추정된다.
