'''Inner Servants' Quarters and Well (State Council Site)'''

This is the site of a well and a roofed corridor which enclosed the courtyard of the State Council. Corridors are long roofed structures which were connected to the opposite sides of a main gate and could be divided into rooms or simply used for storing goods. All central government offices built along the main street outside Gwanghwamun Gate were equipped with corridors. After the reconstruction of the State Council complex in the 19th century, it had an outer gate with an outer corridor as well as an inner gate with an inner corridor. *At the beginning of the 20th century after the main buildings of the complex were dismantled and a new brick building was constructed on the site, other structural elements of the complex were severely damaged.
+
This is the site of the inner servants' quarters and well of the State Council (''Uijeongbu''), the highest government office of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910).

The excavation of the site confirmed remains of an L-shaped corridor with spots for eleven pairs** of pillar base stones along each of the two wings. These findings match the plan of this complex surveyed along with other nearby government offices in 1908. A round stone well with an inside diameter of 1.1 m was discovered outside of the corridor’s southern wall. An area around the well with a diameter of 5.3 m was paved with stones as well. Based on the artifacts found in the well, it remained in use until the period when the office of Gyeonggi-do Provincial Government was set up here.
+
A servants' quarters (''haengnang'') is a long, corridor-shaped building equipped with rooms for staff and spaces for storage. Typically, a servants' quarters served to divide the exterior and interior spaces of a building complex and was equipped with a gate to provide access between the spaces. Such servants' quarters enclosed all of the main government offices along the Six Ministries Street (today's Gwanghwamun Plaza area). The State Council featured both an outer servants' quarters, which served as the facade of the complex along the main road, and an inner servants' quarters, which enclosed the courtyard of the State Council's three main offices.

In 2023, pillar spot(s) and remains of a stone bridge connected to the State Council’s outer corridor were discovered to the east of Gyeongbokgung Palace’s stone pathway confirming its original scale.
+
According to archeological excavations, the inner servants' quarters was an L-shaped structure measuring 10 bays in length that was located along the front and left of the main offices. These findings match surveys of the site taken in 1908 just before the the State Council complex was demolished to make way for a new, Western-style brick building.

 +
A round well was also discovered outside the southern wall of the servants' quarters. The well measured 1.1 m in interior diameter and was surrounded by stone paving that measured 5.3 m in diameter. Based on the artifacts found within the well, it is thought to have remained in use until the construction of the Western-style building in the early 20th century.

*I changed this sentence a bit because it sounds like the whole complex was damaged. But according to the 의정부 text, the three main buildings were intentionally moved before that.
+
Remains of the State Council's outer servants' quarters, including pillar sites and a stone bridge, were discovered in 2023 during the reconstruction of the - of Gyeongbokgung Palace, confirming its original scale.
**My guess.
