경상좌수영성의 옹성은 18세기 중반의 여지도서(輿地圖書)를 비롯한 문헌들에서 3곳으로 기록된다. 1990년 실시한 조사에서도 남문, 동문, 북문 3곳에 설치되었음이 확인되었다. 좌수영지(左水營誌,18세기 말)에서 임신년(1692) 개축 때 동북 옹성 2곳의 여장을 수리했다는 기록이 있어 남·동·북문의 옹성이 1652년 남촌(수영동)으로 옮겨졌을 때 또는 그 직후에 설치되었음을 알 수 있다.

This was the semi-circular wall of the southern gate of Gyeongsangjwasuyeongseong Fortress. A semi-circular wall, a common element of Korean fortress architecture, was built outside of a fortress gate to strengthen its defenses.

According to the Atlas and Geography of Korea (Yeoji doseo), compiled in the 18th century, this fortress had a semi-circular wall in front of three of its gates. An archeological excavation conducted in 1990 confirmed that the southern, northern, and eastern gates were equipped with such semi-circular walls. The western gate was located atop a hill, today's Suyeong Historic Park, and thus did not need or could not accommodate a semi-circular wall.

It is presumed that these semi-circular walls were constructed circa 1652 when the East Gyeongsang-do Navy Headquarters was moved to Haeunpo Port (today's Suyeong-dong). The Map of the East Navy Headquarters (Jwasuyeong ji), compiled in the 18th century, mentions that the eastern and northern semi-circular walls were repaired in 1692 during a reconstruction of the fortress.

영문 해설 내용

옹성은 성문을 보호하기 위해 성문 밖에 쌓은 성벽이다.

18세기 중반 편찬된 『여지도서』 등 여러 문헌에는 경상좌수영성에 3곳의 옹성이 있었다고 기록되어 있다. 1990년에 실시한 조사에서도 남문, 북문, 동문에 옹성이 설치되었던 것으로 확인되었다.

이 옹성들은 1652년 좌수영성이 지금의 수영동 지역으로 옮겨졌을 때 또는 그 직후에 지어진 것으로 추정된다. 18세기 말에 편찬된 『좌수영지』에 따르면 동성과 북성의 옹성은 1692년 좌수영성을 개축할 때 수리하였다고 한다.
