해설문
국문
감산사는 통일신라 성덕왕 18년(719)에 중아찬 김지성(金志誠)이 부모의 명복과 국왕 및 그 가족의 안녕을 빌기 위해 세운 절이다.
감산사의 중심 건물인 대적광전(大寂光殿)에 봉안된 불상으로 머리부분과 앞면의 훼손이 심하고 광배와 대좌도 없어진 것을 보수하였다. 머리에는 나발*과 육계*를 낮게 표현하였다. 양손은 파손되었던 것을 지권인*으로 보수하였다. 그 외 신체부위는 원래의 모습을 간직하고 있는데, 어깨가 각이 지고 결가부좌한 양 무릎이 두텁고 넓어서 전체적으로 당당하고 안정된 모습이었을 것으로 보인다.
원래의 모습은 알 수 없으나 감산사 창건과 연관지어 8세기 초에 조성되었을 것으로 추정되므로 우리나라 비로자나불상 중에서는 이른 시기에 만들어진 작품으로 짐작된다.
- 나발(螺髮): 소라 모양으로 된 부처의 머리카락
- 육계(肉髻): 부처의 정수리에 상투처럼 우뚝 솟아오른 혹과 같은 것으로 지혜를 상징한다.
- 지권인(智拳印): 두 손 모두 엄지손가락을 손안에 넣고 주먹을 쥔 다음, 왼손의 집게손가락을 펴서 오른손으로 감싸쥐고, 오른손의 엄지손가락과 왼손의 집게손가락 끝을 서로 맞대는 손 모양. 오른손은 부처를, 왼손은 중생을 상징한다.

Stone Seated Vairocana Budda of Gamsansa Temple
This stone statue enshrined in Daejeokgwangjeon Hall, the main worship hall of Gamsansa Temple, depicts Vairocana, the Cosmic Buddha, who is the personification of the absolute universal truth. The statue is presumed to date to the 8th century when Gamsansa Temple was founded, although this is uncertain. If correct, this is one of the earliest extant Vairocana statues in Korea.
This statue was missing its original halo and pedestal, and the current ones were added later. The head and side were also severely damaged and later repaired, and thus it is difficult to know what theese parts of the statue originally looked like. The Buddha is seated in a cross-legged position with wide knees and angular shoulders, creating a dignified and stable appearance. The hand gesture, in which the left index finger is clasped by the right hand, is a distinctive feature of Vairocana.
Gamsansa Temple was founded in 719 by the civil official Kim Ji-seong (652-?) to pray for the blissful afterlife of his parents and the prosperity of the king and his family.
