Stele of Yi Saek

2021

This stele was erected to commemorate the life and achievements of Yi Saek (1328-1396), a civil official and scholar who lived at the turn of the Goryeo (918-1392) and Joseon (1392-1910) periods. It is located to the southeast of his tomb.

Yi Saek was renowned for his steadfast loyalty to the Goryeo dynasty during the turbulent period in which he lived. During the reign of King Gongmin (r. 1351-1374) of the Goryeo dynasty, he served various official posts, became an esteemed eminent scholar, and raised excellent students. After the establishment of the Joseon dynasty, he refused the requests of King Taejo (r. 1392-1398) that he serve in the central government and traveled around the country until his death.

This stele was first erected in 1433, but it was lost during the Japanese invasions of 1597-1598. In 1666, the stele was erected again by his descendants. The inscription on the front had been composed by Ha Ryun (1347-1416), a student of Yi Saek, while the inscription on the back was composed by the scholar Song Si-yeol (1607-1689). In 1904, the inscription on the front was removed and replaced with a new inscription that was composed by the civil official Yi Yong-won (1832-1911) and was calligraphed by Yi Yong-jik (1852-1932), a descendant of Yi Saek. The stele consists of a square pedestal, the body stone, and a roof-shaped capstone.

This stele was erected to commemorate the life and achievements of Yi Saek (1328-1396, pen name: Mogeun), a civil official and eminent scholar of the late period of the Goryeo dynasty (918-1392). It was designated as a Chungcheongnam-do Cultural Heritage Material in 1984.

The stele was first erected in 1433. The inscription was composed in 1405 by Ha Ryun (1347-1416), a civil official and disciple of Yi Saek, and calligraphed by Gong Bu (?-1416), a civil official and calligrapher. The original stele was destroyed during the Japanese invasion of 1597, and in 1666 Yi Saek’s descendants erected a new one. The front of the new stele was carved with the original inscription composed by Ha Ryun, while the back was carved with a text composed by Song Si-yeol (1607-1689), citing a writing by Yi Maeng-gyun (1371-1440), Yi Saek’s grandson. The inscription was calligraphed by Yi Su-gyeong (1627-1680), a civil official and Yi Saek’s twelfth-generation descendant, and the title of the stele was written by the civil official Kim Su-hang (1629-1689).

In 1904, the existing inscription on the front was chiseled away and replaced with a new one. The new inscription consisted of a preface composed by Yi Yong-won (1832-1911) and a main text composed by Song Byeong-seon (1836-1905), with calligraphy by Yi Yong-jik (1852-1932), a descendant of Yi Saek. The new inscription praises Yi Saek for his unwavering integrity and for his true greatness in both moral learning and literary writing.

The stele currently stands 145 m from Yi Saek’s tomb. It is presumed to have been moved from its original location after the inscription was recarved in 1904.
