암문 밖에서 이 바위를 보면 벌처럼 생겼다 하여 벌봉이라 한다. 병자호란 때 청 태종이 정기가 서려 있는 벌봉을 깨트려야 산성을 함락시킬 수 있다고 하여 이 바위를 깨트리고 산성을 굴복시켰다는 전설이 있다. 벌봉은 해발 512.2m로 남한산성의 수어장대(497m)보다 높으므로 남한산성의 서쪽 내부와 동쪽 성벽이 훤히 내려다보인다. 병자호란 당시 이 지역을 청나라 군에 빼앗겨 적이 성 내부의 동태를 쉽게 파악할 수 있었으며, 화포로 성안까지 포격할 수 있었다.

Beolbong Peak (Namhansanseong Fortress)

Beolbong Peak (512.2 m) is a rock formation located at the northern end of Bongamseong, an outer auxiliary fortification of Namhansanseong Fortress. Due to its high elevation, the peak commands a clear view of the western part of the main fortress as well as its eastern wall. The name Beolbong, meaning “Bee Peak,” comes from its visual resemblance to a bee.

It was believed that this peak bore the vital force of the area and only by destroying it one could capture the fortress. A story goes that during the Manchu invasion of 1637, the enemy did precisely that and successfully broke the auxiliary fortress’s defenses. The Manchu army were able to easily observe the situation inside the main fortress and even bombard the fortress with cannons.
