여수 충민사는 충무공 이순신을 기리는 사당으로, 충무공 사당으로서는 최초의 사액* 사당이다.
충민사는 이순신이 노량해전에서 전사한 뒤, 선조 34년(1601)에 당시 영의정이었던 이항복의 요청에 따라 왕이 통제사 이시언에게 사당 건립을 명하여 지어졌으며, 우부승지 김상용이 간청하여 선조에게 ‘충민사’라는 편액을 받았다. 영조 8년(1732)에 고쳐 지었고, 고종 5년(1868)에 흥선대원군이 서원 철폐령에 따라 충민단만 남기고 모두 철거되었다가 고종 10년(1873)에 지역 유림**들의 진정으로 다시 지어지고 판서 윤용술이 쓴 현판이 걸렸다. 1919년 일제에 의해 강제로 철거되었으나, 1947년 주민들이 힘을 합쳐 다시 지었다. 1975년에 충민사 정화 사업을 계기로 새로 건립되었다.
여수 지역 유림과 주민들은 이곳에 모셔진 충무공 이순신, 의민공 이억기, 충현공 안홍국을 위한 제례를 매년 지내고 있다. 음력 3월 10일에는 춘기 석채례를, 음력 9월 10일에는 추기 석채례(釋菜禮)***를, 양력 4월 28일에는 충무공 탄신제를 지낸다.

Chungminsa Shrine, venerating the Admiral Yi Sun-sin (1545-1598), was established in 1601. It was the first shrine honoring Yi to receive a royal charter.
After Admiral Yi’s death in the Battle of Noryang, the chief state councilor Yi Hang-bok (1556-1618) put forward a request to King Seonjo (r. 1567-1608) asking to build this shrine. The king ordered the commander of the Navy of the Three Provinces Yi Si-eon (?-1624) to oversee the construction. By the request of the fifth royal secretary Kim Sang-yong (1561-1637), the shrine received a royal charter. Later, two military officials Yi Eok-gi (1561-1597) and An Hong-guk (1555-1597) were additionally venerated at the shrine.
The shrine was demolished in 1868 when most shrines and Confucian academies were shut down by a nationwide decree. In 1873, it was reconstructed by the local Confucian community. In 1919 during the Japanese colonial period (1910-1945), the Japanese authorities demolished the shrine, but in 1947, it was rebuilt again through the efforts of the citizens (of Yeosu?). In 1975, the shrine underwent purification(?).
The complex consists of a red-spiked gate, main gate, inner gate, and the shrine all of which are aligned in a straight line. Veneration ceremonies are held at the shrine annually on the 10th day of the 3rd and the 9th lunar months. A ceremony commemorating the birthday of Yi Sun-sin is held on April 28.
영문 해설 내용
충민사는 임진왜란 때의 명장 이순신(1545-1598)을 기리는 사당으로 1601년에 세워졌다. 이순신을 기리는 사당 중 최초로 사액을 받았다.
이순신이 노량해전에서 전사한 뒤, 당시 영의정이었던 이항복(1556-1618)이 선조(재위 1567-1608)에게 사당 건립을 요청하였다. 이후 왕이 삼도수군통제사 이시언(?-1624)에게 명을 내려 사당을 건립하게 하였으며, 우부승지 김상용(1561-1637)이 왕에게 간청하여 사액을 받았다. 이후 이억기(1561-1597)와 안홍국(1555-1597)을 추가로 모셨다.
1868년에 서원철폐령에 따라 철거되었다가 1873년에 지역 유림들의 제안으로 다시 지어졌다. 일제강점기인 1919년 일제에 의해 강제로 철거되었으나, 1947년 주민들이 힘을 합쳐 다시 지었다. 1975년에는 충민사 정화 사업이 시행되었다.
경내에는 홍살문, 정문, 내삼문, 사당이 일직선상에 배치되어 있다. 매년 음력 3월 10일과 음력 9월 10일에 제례를 지내고, 양력 4월 28일에는 이순신 탄신제를 지낸다.
