고성 옥천사 청련암 철제솥은 옥천사의 암자인 청련암 마당 한켠에 마련된, 돌로 된 받침대 위에 놓여 있다.
청련암 솥은 통도사 철제솥과 비슷한 모양이지만 공양 외의 또 다른 용도로 쓰인 듯 조금 더 크다. 실제로 연화산옥천사어공지지진상봉행청 유공록서 현판(蓮華山玉泉寺御供紙地進上奉行廳 有功錄序 懸板, 1831년), 용운선사유공명병서 현판(龍雲禪師有功銘幷序 懸板, 1876년), 농성화상유공문(聾惺和尙有功文, 1898년) 등의 기록에 따르면 옥천사가 임금이 사용할 어람용 종이를 만들어서 진상했던 조선 시대 사찰임을 확인할 수 있다. 이와 같은 기록을 통해 옥천사와 그에 딸린 암자에서 종이를 제작하였다는 것을 알 수 있으며 청련암 철제솥은 당시 종이를 만들 때 사용되었던 것으로 추정할 수 있다.
조선 시대에 이와 같은 모양과 기능을 가진 철로 만든 솥은 흔하지 않다는 점에서 당시의 문화를 이해할 수 있는 중요한 유물로 평가받고 있다.

Iron bowl/cauldron of Cheongnyeonam Hermitage of Okcheonsa Temple, Goseong
This iron bowl/cauldron rests on rock supports, to the side in front of Cheongnyeonam Hermitage of Okcheonsa Temple.
Cauldrons/Bowls of this type are usually used in temples to collect offerings to the Buddha, but the cauldron/bowl in Cheongnyeonam Hermitage is considerably large, so it is presumed that it was used for a different purpose. According to the records from the hanging boards and documents kept in Okcheonsa Temple, the temple’s hermitage was used as a large paper manufacture from the end of the 18th till the end of 19th centuries. The paper produced here was used by the royal palace for inspection documents presented to the king. Therefore, it is presumed this cauldron/bowl was used for boiling the bark of paper mulberry (Broussonetia papyrifera) which is one of the ingredients used in production of hanji, traditional Korean paper.
Iron bowls/cauldrons of such shape and presumed function were not common during the Joseon period (1392-1910)*, which makes this vessel a valuable source of information in/for understanding the culture of that time.

이 철제 솥은 옥천사의 소속 암자인 청련암 마당 한켠에 마련된 돌로 된 받침대 위에 놓여 있다.
사찰에 있는 이러한 솥은 보통 공양을 하는 데 쓰이지만, 청련암의 솥은 규모가 매우 큰 것으로 보아 다른 용도로 쓰인 것으로 추정된다. 옥천사에 남아 있는 현판과 문헌 등의 기록에 따르면 18세기 말부터 19세기 말까지 옥천사와 그에 딸린 암자에는 종이를 만드는 대규모의 공장이 있었고, 이곳에서는 궁중의 어람용 종이를 생산하였다. 따라서 이 철제 솥은 종이의 재료인 닥나무를 삶는 데 사용한 것으로 추정된다.
조선시대에 이와 같은 모양과 기능을 가진 철제 솥은 흔하지 않다는 점에서 당시의 문화를 이해할 수 있는 중요한 유물로 평가받고 있다.
