해설문

국문

승암사는 신라 헌강왕때 도선(道詵)이 창건했다고 전하는 사찰이다. 근세에는 해안, 만응 대종사들이 주석하면서 한벽선원, 승암강원 등을 개설하여 이 지방 불교계의 학풍을 크게 진작시킨 곳이다.

이곳에 『묘법연화경(妙法蓮華經)』과 『금강경오가해(金剛經五家解)』 등의 불서가 소장되어 있다. 『묘법연화경』은 부처가 세상에 나타난 근본의 뜻을 밝힌 경전으로, 조선 세종 25년(1443)에 고산 화암사(花岩寺)에서 간행한 판본*이다.

금강경의 해석서인 『금강경오가해』는 명종 13년(1558)에 간행한 불서로서 현존하는 판본이 귀하여 불교사적 가치가 크다.

Buddhist Books Kept at Seungamsa Temple

These three Buddhist books kept at Seungamsa Temple include the Lotus Sutra (Saddharmapundarika Sutra) and the Commentaries of Five Masters on the Diamond Sutra.

The woodblock printing of the Lotus Sutra was published in 1443 at Hwaeomsa Temple to pray for the longevity of King Sejong (r. 1418-1450) and the blissful rebirth of the late King Taejong (r. 1400-1418). The Lotus Sutra is one of the most popular and influential Buddhist sutras, and one of its main teachings is that all beings have the potential to become a buddha.

The woodblock printing of the Commentaries of Five Masters on the Diamond Sutra was published in 1558 and is a rare extant edition of this book.

Seungamsa Temple is said to have been founded by Doseon (827-898), an eminent Buddhist monk of the Unified Silla period (668-935). During the Joseon period (1392-1910), the temple was renowned for publishing Buddhist books.
