공회당 건물로 시작한 인제성당 이야기

인제성당은 한국전쟁 당시 북한의 영향권 아래 공회당으로 사용되었던 건물의 기초 구조부를 그대로 활용하여 건립하였다. 옛 공회당 건물은 한국전쟁 중에 포격으로 지붕부가 파괴되고 벽체만 앙상하게 남아 있었다. 그 잔해를 허물고 바닥구조물과 벽체를 그대로 활용한 것이다. 이러한 건축적 특징을 통해 인제성당이 간직한 한국 근대사의 흔적을 살펴볼 수 있다.

Inje Catholic Church was built on the concrete foundations remaining from a building used during the Korean War (1950-1953) as a gathering hall by the North Korean Communist Party*. The original building’s roof was destroyed in an artillery attack and only parts of the walls survived. The rubble was cleaned out and the church building was constructed on the remaining floor and wall structure. This unique feature of Inje Catholic Church makes it possible to examine the traces of modern Korean history in the structure ofthe building.

the building seems to have been used as a theater during the occupation
