태안 소근진성은 태안군 소원면 소근리 해안가에 있는 조선시대 진성이다. 진성이란 군사적으로 중요한 지역에 성을 쌓은 군사시설이다. 본래 이곳은 서해 바닷길의 유명한 포구로, 고려시대에 ‘오근이포’, ‘후근이포’라 하다 조선시대에 ‘소근포’라 하였다.

서해의 포구는 고려 말부터 조선 초까지 일본의 해적인 왜구가 들어오는 경로였다. 왜구는 사람을 죽이고 마을을 폐허로 만들었기 때문에 나라에서는 왜구를 막기 위해 많은 노력을 기울였다. 조선 태종 때에 오근이포를 ‘소근포’로 바꾸어 ‘진’이라는 군사시설을 설치했고, 세조 때에는 이곳에서 태안과 당진 앞바다까지 지키도록 하였다. 중종 때에는 돌로 성을 쌓았는데, 땅 모양을 그대로 살려 동, 남, 북쪽에 성벽을 만들었다.

소근진성에서는 파견된 관리들과 3백 명이 넘는 수군이 주둔해 외적과 외국의 배를 감시하고 곡식을 실은 배가 무사히 지나도록 지켰다. 1895년(고종 32) 새로운 군사제도가 시행되며 수군진으로서의 역할이 끝나 지금은 성벽 대부분이 무너지고 동쪽 일부만 남아있다.

Sogeunjinseong Fortress in Taean

This fortress was built in 1514 at the coast in Sogeun-ri Village, an important military point at the time.

The attacks of the Japanese pirates were a constant threat in this area from the late period of Goryeo (918-1392) to the early period of Joseon (1392-1910) dynasty*. The state put a lot of effort into preventing these attacks, which were very devastating and caused many civilian casualties. At the beginning of the 15th century**, a military base was set up in Sogeun-ri Village to protect the harbor, and later in 1514, a stone fortification was built here. At the time, the fortress housed the officials sent from the royal court and over 300 naval troops, which surveilled enemy and foreign vessels. This fortress served as a base camp of the naval forces up until 1895 when a new national military system was implemented.

The western wall of the fortress was built along the coastline facing the harbor while the remaining sections of the wall were built on the elevated area making use of the natural terrain. The fortress measures about 650 m in perimeter, although most of it has collapsed* with only a part of the eastern wall still remaining.

소근진성은 1514년 소근리 해안가의 군사적 요충지에 지은 조선시대의 군사시설이다.

고려 말부터 조선 초까지 서해의 포구를 통해 왜구가 자주 칩입하였다. 왜구는 사람을 죽이고 마을을 폐허로 만들었기 때문에 나라에서는 왜구를 막기 위해 많은 노력을 기울였다. 15세기 초에는 소근리 포구에 군사가 주둔하는 진을 설치했고, 1514년에 석성을 쌓았다. 당시 성에는 조정에서 파견된 관리들과 3백 명이 넘는 수군이 주둔하며, 외적과 외국의 배를 감시하였다고 한다. 1895년 새로운 군사제도가 시행될 때까지 수군진으로 사용되었다.

성의 서쪽은 바다에 접하고 있으며, 동·남·북쪽의 성벽은 자연지형을 이용하여 구축하였다. 성의 둘레는 650m 정도인데 지금은 성벽 대부분이 무너지고 동쪽 일부만 남아있다.
