울산 경상좌도병영성의 구조는 구릉의 능선 바깥쪽 경사면을 활용하여 한쪽에만 돌을 쌓아 성벽을 만드는 편축식이다.

경사면 앞쪽을 ‘ㄴ’자 형태로 파내고 지대석과 면석을 한 단 놓는다. 그 위로 성의 몸체인 체성을 쌓는데, 외벽은 수직으로 내벽은 계단식으로 동시에 쌓아 올린다. 외벽과 내벽 사이의 공간은 잡석으로 채운 후 단단히 다졌는데 이를 ’뒤채움‘이라 한다. 지대석 바로 위에 놓는 면석의 뒤채움돌은 면석의 크기와 비슷한 크기의 돌을 사용하여 성벽의 내구성을 높일 수 있도록 하였다. 계단식으로 쌓은 내벽은 빗물 등으로 인해 성벽이 붕괴하는 위험을 줄이기 위해 흙으로 덮어 보호하였는데, 이를 내탁이라고 한다. 일정한 높이로 쌓은 성벽 위에는 판형의 석재인 미석을 놓은 후 방어용 성벽인 여장을 설치하였다.

현재 병영성의 성벽은 지대석과 일부 면석만이 남아 있는데, 아래의 그림을 통해 본래의 성벽 높이와 비교해 볼 수 있다.

Structure of the Fortress Wall (Military Headquarters of East Gyeongsang-do Province, Ulsan)

The walls of the fortress surrounding the Military Headquarters of East Gyeongsang-do Province were made by using the ridges on the outside of the hill slopes and stacking stones on one of their sides.

To construct the walls, a cut was made into the bedrock along the slope to create a solid and level base for the wall. Atop this, the exterior facade of the wall, consisting of a foundation stone and several face stones, was erected. The space behind this was tightly packed with rubble, with larger stones placed directly behind the exterior wall to enhance its durability. The interior side of the wall was finished in a terraced manner and covered with packed earth to reduce the danger of the wall collapsing due to rainwater. The top of the wall was finished with a capstone and a parapet.

Today, only the wall's foundation stones and some of its face stones remain. However, the following image can help to imagine the original height of the wall.
