반암리 청자요지는 계명산 서쪽 산기슭에 있다. 이곳은 앞으로 용산천이 흘러 서해로 나가는 곳으로 원료, 땔감, 운송 등에 있어 가마터로 최적의 장소이다. 일찍이 여기는 가마골로 불리며 논바닥에 점토 채취와 관련된 구덩이가 많았다고 전한다.
이 유적은 10세기 후반에서부터 11세기 후반에 만들어진 초기 청자 가마터이다. 초기 청자가마를 대표하는 벽돌가마 1기, 중형 진흙가마 1기, 소형 진흙가마 3기가 순서대로 겹쳐져 있다. 가마의 중첩된 모습을 통해 이곳에서 초기 청자 생산이 집중되었던 것을 알 수 있다.
유물은 해무리굽* 사발, 독립문 모양 청자, 꽃잎 모양 접시, 잔, 주전자 등의 초기 청자와 함께 갑발**, 기왓조각 등이 출토되었다. 특히 대형 건물터에서는 관○거(○官○車○), 이월입일(二月卄日), ○평(○坪) 등의 글자가 새겨진 기와가 출토되는데 이곳은 초기 청자의 생산을 관리하고 선별하던 관청터로 추정된다.
