Ungcheoneupseong Walled Town had moats along the eastern and the southern sections of its wall. The walls of the moat are made of stones of different sizes arranged in irregular patterns without straight lines. The bottom of the moat was also laid with stones and had wooden spikes densely installed across its surface to prevent the enemy from crossing the moat. Over time, the walled town underwent more than three expansions and reconstructions, and it is presumed that when bastions and semi-circular demibastions were added, some parts of the moat were removed and built anew.

국문

웅천읍성은 동쪽 성벽과 남쪽 성벽에 해자를 두어 적으로부터 성을 보호하였다. 해자 벽은 크기가 다른 돌을 줄을 맞추지 않고 불규칙하게 쌓는 방식으로 만들었는데, 바닥에는 돌을 깔고 적이 건너지 못하도록 뾰족한 나무 말뚝을 촘촘히 세웠다.

동쪽 성벽 해자는 성벽 밖으로 약 7~12m 간격을 두고 조성되었는데 현재 웅천-제포 간 간선도로와 인접해 있다. 동남쪽 성벽 해자는 위쪽 폭 4.2~4.6m, 아래쪽 폭 4m, 최대 깊이 3m이며, 동북쪽 성벽 해자는 위쪽 폭 7~7.6m, 아래쪽 폭 6~6.5m, 최대 깊이 3.5m이다. 남쪽 성벽 해자는 성벽 밖으로 약 7~8m 떨어진 곳에서 발견되었으며, 폭은 위쪽 4.3m, 아래쪽 4m, 최대 깊이는 2.5m이다.

세종 대 읍성을 처음 지은 이후 모두 3번 이상 증축과 개축이 이루어졌으며, 옹성**과 치성***을 축조하는 과정에서 기존의 해자를 일부 없애고 새로 만들기도 한 것으로 보인다.

  • 해자(垓子): 성벽 밖에 도랑을 둘러 파고 물을 채워 적의 침입을 막는 시설.
  • 옹성(甕城): 성문을 보호하고 성을 튼튼히 지키기 위하여 큰 성문 밖에 원형(圓形)이나 방형(方形)으로 쌓은 작은 성.
  • 치성(雉城): 성 위에 낮게 쌓은 담으로 여기에 몸을 숨기고 적을 감시하거나 공격하였다.
