해설문
국문
이 마애불은 암벽에 새겨진 높이 6.8m에 달하는 대형 불좌상으로 상제암 마애여래좌상이라고도 한다. 얼굴을 비롯해 상반신은 얕은 돋을새김이고, 그 아래는 선각(線刻)으로 새겼다. 부조(浮彫)와 선각을 혼용하는 것은 신라 말에서 고려 초에 걸친 대형 마애불에서 일반적으로 사용되었던 기법이다.
마애불은 마멸이 심하고 조각수법이 거칠지만 섬세한 얼굴은 근엄한 부처의 모습이 잘 표현되어 있으며, 대형의 마애불상으로 가치를 지닌다. 마애불상 주변에 보이는 크고 작은 구멍들이 있어 불상 앞에 건물이 있었던 것으로 추정된다.
