'''Building Sites (Goryeo Period)'''

Sites of the buildings constructed during the Goryeo period (918-1392) were confirmed in various places of the temple complex. Most of the sites are comparatively small buildings which were built and disappeared at different points in time throughout the Goryeo period. Many sites feature remains of underfloor-heating systems. While the sites that date back to the early Goryeo had the fireboxes for the underfloor heating installed inside the houses, the sites from the later periods of Goryeo had the fireboxes built outside. A number of convex roof-end tiles and roof tiles with inscriptions were found at and around the site of the main worship hall of the west courtyard. These findings suggest that the area continued to serve an important function in the temple throughout the Goryeo period. Excavated artifacts* include a bronze Buddha’s head, bronze ritual containers, earthenware, green celadon, roof tiles which bear the name of the temple “Mirueksa,” and roof tiles with the years of production engraved on them. The excavated roof tiles provide important clues on the timeline of expansions and reconstructions of the temple.

Building Sites (Goryeo Period)

The sites of buildings constructed in the Goryeo period (918-1392) were identified across the temple complex. These many buildings were relatively small in scale and did not exist concurrently. Rather, they reflect a process of construction and renovation at different points throughout the Goryeo period.

The artifacts excavated from the building sites help to inform the timeline of expansions and reconstructions of the temple. These include a bronze Buddha’s head, bronze ritual containers, earthenware, green celadon, roof tiles bearing the name “Mireuksa,” and roof tiles with the years of production engraved on them. Many of the sites were found to have had underfloor heating systems. The sites dating to the early Goryeo period had indoor fireboxes, while those dating to the later Goryeo period had outdoor fireboxes, thus showing the change in technology over time.

  • Excavated where? And do they mean “Excavated artifacts of the Goryeo period”?
