해설문
국문
향나무는 우리나라 중부 이남의 동해안을 비롯하여 울릉도와 일본 등지에 분포하며, 상나무 또는 노송나무로도 불린다. 그 밖의 지역에 있는 것들은 모두 인공적으로 심은 것이다. 향이 강해서 제사 때 향을 피우는 용도로 쓰이며 정원수와 공원수로도 많이 심는다.
양동의향나무는 송첨 종택의 사당 앞에 있다. 전해 내려오는 이야기에 의하면, 조선 초기 문관이며 양동의 경주 손 씨 입향조*인 손소(孫昭, 1433∼1484) 선생이 세조 5년(1459)에 집을 새로 짓고 그 기념으로 심었다고 한다.
이 나무는 원줄기가 지상 90cm 높이에서 세 방향으로 가지를 낸 뒤에 그 윗부분이 꾸불꾸불 위로 자라서 다시 세 가지를 내고 있다. 수관** 폭이 12m에 달할 정도로 수세가 매우 왕성하여 멀리서 보면 분재(盆栽)처럼 꾸민 듯 보인다.
