전주 풍남초등학교는 1919년 11월 6일에 전주여자공립보통학교로 개교하였다. 그 후 1941년에 전주 풍남국민학교로, 1996년에 전주 풍남초등학교로 명칭이 바뀌어 현재에 이르고 있다.

전주 풍남초등학교 강당은 1936년에 붉은 벽돌을 이용해 건축되어, 체육 활동 및 교내 행사 개최 등의 다목적 강당으로 사용하였다. 강당은 기둥이 없는 개방 공간으로 되어 있으며 무대가 설치되어 있다. 현재는 건축 당시에 비해 3칸 정도가 확장되었는데 붉은색과 흑색의 벽돌이 섞여 있는 건축물 옆면에서 당시의 흔적을 확인할 수 있다. 증축 과정에서 내부 마감과 창호 등이 일부 변형되었으나 전체적인 외관의 형태가 잘 보존되어 있다.

건립 이후 근대 학교 건축물로서 원형을 잘 유지한 전주 풍남초등학교 강당은 건축과 교육의 역사적 가치를 인정받아 2021년에 전북특별자치도 등록국가유산으로 지정되었다.

이 건물은 1936년 체육 활동 및 교내 행사 개최 등의 다목적 강당으로 지어졌다. 풍남초등학교는 1919년 전주여자공립보통학교로 개교하였으며, 1941년에 풍남국민학교로, 1996년에 풍남초등학교로 개칭되었다.
