(In the Buddhist tradition,) the term reliquary refers to a vessel containing relics or remains of the Buddha enshrined inside a pagoda. In April of 1959 when the Five-story Brick Pagoda of Songnimsa Temple was dismantled for renovation, several artifacts dating back to the Unified Silla (668-935) and the Goryeo (918-1392) periods were discovered inside. These artifacts are currently kept at the Daegu National Museum.

The artifacts include a wooden Buddha statue and a tortoise-shaped stone container which were found in the pagoda’s first-story and second-story body stones, respectively. The stone container held inside a gilt-bronze reliquary shaped like a Buddhist worship hall and a tree-shaped silver-gilt decoration, both presumed to have been made during the Unified Silla period. The relics were enshrined inside a green-glass jar placed inside the reliquary. Also, a round celadon lidded bowl with inlaid designs and two gilt-bronze circular objects were discovered inside the bottom part of the pagoda’s decorative top. It is a rare case for celadon which was more commonly used for burial objects to be found inside a Buddhist pagoda.
