Points to Discuss

Lyndsey's Questions

  • Notes will be "EN" for english
  • Can we just change "Preparing the Seed Grain" to "Preparing the Seeds"
  • Early and late planting to early and late sowing
    • Avoid "planting" because it is vague
    • Cultivating, plowing, harrowing, sowing, weeding, hoeing(?), transplanting, harvesting
  • Dry under the sun
  • How to say place with urine in the stable: sump, pool
  • Cow and horse stable? Cow stable? Just stable?
  • Wooden tub, trough
  • Black and white --> dark and light (soil, buckwheat)
  • 초, 풀, weeds? grasses? grass?
  • 숙 soft, ready, well-prepared
  • first, second, third week
  • best, second best, worst
  • can we use your? your feet?
  • Should cultivating rice all be on one page? Since it mentions "including upland rice" then it should be all together, right?
  • paro = chugae or milgae?
  • weeding or howing? weed with a homi?
  • Upland Rice -- cultivation not planting - Method
  • tamp them with your foot / stamp them underfoot
  • earth, dirt X, soil O
  • oak branches with leaves? Oak steams with leaves?
  • 種山稻法 --> Upland Rice Method / 曰旱稻【鄕名: 山稻】 --> called hando. Its common name is mebyeo.
    • Title says "upland" but texts says "highlands"
  • Appropriate, suitable?
  • should, can, etc. --> This can be looked at in the next semester
  • Millet:
    • hoe and remove the weeds growing in between the seedlings. --> redundant?
    • Where they are thick, cover up the roots with dirt. --> what is "they" the millet seedlings or the weeds?
  • Relay cropping (times over lap), double cropping (one, then the next), intercropping (start the same time, planted together).
  • Plowing with an ox? Or a cow? Ox manure?
  • Beans
    • Should chungyeong and geungyeong be pronounced in Korean, not Chinese? Since it is 향명, should geungyeong be geurugari? What about chungyeong?
  • Solar terms: korean romanization or english name? Right now there are both. Anyways, there will be an editor's note.
  • Barley/Wheat
    • For barren fields, spread twice the amount of weeds, and if the weeds could not be cut, use manure, or also, the method used for soybeans and red beans. --> what is the bean method?
    • trim willow branches and spread them in the stable where the cows and horses are kept. Take them out every five or six days, stacking them to make manure. --> Needs clarification
  • Sesame
    • Any ideas what palleung is?
    • Suimcha versus tteulkkae, etc?
  • Buckwheat
    • Why is there mention of sesame and perilla at the end of this? It is in the original text... but it seems weird... why is this?
  • is 입추 the autumnal equinox?

Anca's Questions

  • Who does the personalities and other glossary terms appearing in the preface?
  • In the glossary I included the term 'nine grains'. Should I add the table with the nine grains here?
  • If for a specific term I include the information that was added by a certain student during the semester, should I specify whose contribution was?
  • Should 'early- and late-sowing varieties' be listed separately in the glossary?
  • If there is no much info about a certain term do we need to add al of the following: DefinitionExplanationMultimediaFurther ReadingRelated Article? (ie hemp sack)
  • If the English does not use romanization, then do we have to romanize the Chinese? (see storage pit)
  • If a term is composed of two words do we capitalize both ? (see earthenware jar)
  • For 'earthenware jar' I took a definition which has a reference. How do I add the reference so it does not appear at the end of the page? Can I make a hyperlink to 한국민족문화대백과사전?(same situation for jeomcheon, chaff, )
  • Review 'wooden tub'-in some parts is 'wooden tub', in some part just 'tub'/'manger'.(chapter 2)
  • Contents of glossary too long?(beginning of page-the list)
  • In chapter 3 草 is translated once as 'straw' and once as 'grass'. Alsoo see the term 'grass'.
  • Chapter 4:鋤 (호미 서)- it mean to weed (with a homi)-how should be this added to the glossary?
  • For 米 is it 쌀 or 미 (hangeul)? Same situation for red beans 小豆 밭; proso millet 黍 기장; barley 보리 大麥; soybeans 大豆 콩; wheat 小麥 밀; sesame 眞荏子 참깨; buckwheat 木麥 메밀; perilla 水荏子 들깨.
  • Chapter 5-고무래 and 판로.
  • Chapter 5-both 'early planting' and 'early sowing' are used (at the end).
  • Chapter 5.3-willow branches are included in the plant varieties category? ( Chop the soft ends of willow branches. Spread them thickly all over the fields and then stamp them underfoot. Let the soil dry completely under the sun and (then) irrigate the field.)
  • Chapter 5.3-How to romanize 판로? pallo or panno
  • Chapter 8-would it be better to add chungyeong and geungyeong together in the glossary?

Today's Decisions

Lyndsey

  • try to use the same English expression for a term for consistency / but still open to variation for now
    • example: sump (for a place with urine in the stable) / stable
  • need to think about how to organize the "cultivating rice" section
    • all the subsections should be included in one page (to keep consistency with other sections)
    • it will make the "cultivating rice" page very long
    • need to figure out a proper way for navigating each subsection
  • Should chungyeong and geungyeong be pronounced in Korean, not Chinese?
    • 그루갈이(geurugari), 봄갈이(bomgari)

Anca

  • Solar terms: korean romanization or english name?
    • English name - glossary page should be changed as well
  • If the English does not use romanization, then do we have to romanize the Chinese? (see storage pit)
    • romanize the korean word, in this case 움집 / umjip

Evelyn

  • for some long terms or a phrase in the glossary page
    • romanization can be omitted
  • terms in the Land Types page can be categorized
    • ex. land types, land qualities... etc.

Chanagseop

  • need to find out more concrete
  • will categorize terms for measurements
    • ex. length, width, volume...

Glossary

  • delete the subsection like definition, explanation, multimedia... etc, if you don't have related information
  • use '''bold''' formatting, instead of ===heading=== for the subsections, in order to avoid ugly, long TOC
  • use lower case for the first letter of each glossary term
  • for each individual article,
    • make hyperlinks for each term in the English translation
    • make a list of hyperlinks for each term in the glossary section of each page

What we need to do

  • finalize the names of glossary terms
  • the names of glossary term should be made as a heading (using equal marks)
    • ex. ==dry farming==
  • the subsections should be made bold (using quatation marks)
    • '''Definition'''
