피(稷)의 성질은 저지대에 습기가 많은 곳이 적합한데, 2월 중순에 땅을 갈고 목작(木斫) 향명(鄕名)으로는 소흘라(所訖羅)이다. 으로 부드럽게 다듬는다. 3월 상순부터 4월 상순까지 언제나 파종할 수 있다. 파종법은 기장․조[黍粟] 파종법과 동일하다. 또는 종자를 뿌리는 방법[撒擲]도 괜찮다. 밭이 척박하다면 분회(糞灰) 잘 삭힌 거름과 뇨회(尿灰)이다. 아래도 이와 같다. 를 사용하며, 경우에 따라 우선 이랑 사이에 잡초를 깐 뒤에 갈아서 파종한다. 김매기는 2번 한다.
피(稷) 역시 일찍 익는 만종(晩種)이 있다. 향명(鄕名)으로는 강직(姜稷)이다.
양맥(兩麥)의 바닥에 6월 상순에 심을 수 있다.
