Prof. Kim's Lecture

  • Translation is not Language A to Language B, but rather, a new writing of the facts described in Language A in Language B
  • There was a problem in the past that there is no appropriate words for the translation.
  • Not everything in the world can be explained through language.
  • If you do not understand the facts of the original text, then the translation will be meaningless.
  • The facts can also be explained via data.
  • Two kinds of language: written and oral.
  • There are many limitations to expression, such as grammar.
  • It is naive/stupid to try to copy down exactly what someone says. There are many things which can be forgotten. But if what the person says is written down as key data points, and then later the context and flow are added, then that is better.
