Story

Unlike the other main royal palaces of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910), namely Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, Changgyeonggung, and Gyeonghuigung, Deoksugung Palace began as a royal residence of a descendant of the royal family. It was briefly used following the Japanese invasions of 1592-1598, then left until it was repurposed as the palace of the Korean Empire in 1897.
