흠경각 현판

Definition

‘흠경(欽敬)’은 글자 그대로 풀이하면 ‘흠모하고 공경한다’는 뜻이 되지만 여기서는 ‘하늘을 공경하여 공손히 사람에게 필요한 시간을 알려 준다’는 뜻으로 보아야 한다. 흠경각에 시간을 알리는 천문 기기들이 있었기 때문이다. 『서경』 「요전」의 ‘흠약호천(欽若昊天)’, ‘경수인시(敬授人時)’라는 구절에서 그 출처를 찾을 수 있는데 원문을 풀이하면 다음과 같다. “이에 희씨(羲氏)와 화씨(和氏) 에게 명하여 하늘을 공경히 따라서 해와 달과 성신(星辰)을 기구로 헤아리고 관찰하고 기록하여[曆象] 백성의 농사철[人時]을 공경히 주게 하셨다.” 세종 당시 흠경각을 창설하는 데 참여한 관료이자 과학자인 김돈(金墩, 1385~1440년)이 기문(記文)을 지은 바 있다. 현판은 1995년에 설치하였으며, 서예가 동강 조수호(趙守鎬)가 쓰고 오옥진이 새겼다.
