함원전 현판

Definition

‘함원(含元)’은 ‘원기를 간직한다’는 의미이다. ‘명나라 때 반사조(潘士藻)라는 사람이 편찬한 『독역술(讀易述)』에서 건괘에 대한 「단전」의 해설인“건도가 변하여 화함에 각각 성명(性命)을 바르게 하니 태화(太和)를 온전히 보존하여 이에 이롭고 정(貞)하다.”를 주석하는 가운데, “성(性)은 생성의 이치이고 명(命)은 생성의 기이다. 태화(太和)는 원기(元氣)가 끊임없이 나는 것이니,정(貞)하여 원기를 머금고[含元] 또 만물의 처음을 연다.”라고 썼다. 태화를 원기와 연관하여 설명한 것이다. 함원전은 당나라의 궁전 이름이기도 했다. 『구당서(舊唐書)』에 당 고종 3(651)년에 함원전을 새로 지은 사실이 기재되어 있는데 본래 이름은 봉래궁(蓬來宮)이었다. 지금의 현판은 1888(고종 25)년에 이명재(李命宰, 1838~1895년)가 썼다. 예조참판, 대사헌 등을 지낸 문신이다.
