태원전 현판

Definition

‘태원(泰元)’은 ‘하늘’을 뜻한다. 『한서』 「예악지(禮樂志)」에서 “오직 태원(泰元)이 존귀하고 토지신은 변방을 다스리니, 하늘을 씨줄로 하고 땅을 날줄로 하며, 네 계절을 이루었다.”라 하였는데, 당나라 때 학자인 안사고(顔師古, 581~645년)가 여기에 주석을 달기를 “태원은 하늘(天)이다”고 하였다. 국장(國葬) 때 시신을 안치하는 곳이므로 ‘하늘’이라는 존칭으로 부른 것으로 보인다.
