수경당 현판

Definition

‘수경(壽慶)’은 ‘장수를 누리는 복’을 뜻한다. ‘수(壽)’는 장수를 뜻하고, ‘경(慶)’은 복을 의미한다.

『서경』 「홍범」에서는 ‘수’를 오복의 으뜸으로 꼽는다. “오복의 첫 번째는 오래 사는 것[壽]이고, 두 번째는 부(富)이고, 세 번째는 강녕(康寧)한 것이고, 네번째는 덕을 좋아하는 것[攸好德]이고, 다섯 번째는 목숨을 살펴서 마치는 것[考終命]이다.”라는 구절에서 채침은 “사람은 우선 수(壽)가 있은 뒤에여러 복(福)을 누릴 수 있으므로 수가 맨 먼저인 것이다.”라고 풀이하였다.
