In the fifteenth year of Queen Seondeok’s reign (606-647; r. 632-647), Baekje general Uijik led an army and attacked in division the two forts of Gammul and Dongjam. The Queen sent out Kim Yushin to lead the troops and resist them, but in the bitter battle their strength was running out. <1> Yushin turned around and said to Binyeongja, “Things have turned critical. Would you fiercely go into battle so that it would encourage the minds of the crowd?” Binyong bowed and replied, “I will pay back by my death.” He came out and said to his servant Hapjeol, “I am going to go die for my country and my family. My son Geojin will most likely will want to die with me. If father and son share the same fate, on whom the family rely on? You shall collect my remains completely and return with Geojin and console his mother’s heart with it.” Immediately whipping the horse, he charged in with his spear, killed several people by striking then died. Geojin saw this from afar and tried to run over. Hapjeol said, “Big Master gave me, Hapjeol, an order, that I send Young Master back and console the Lady. If you defy your father’s orders and discard your mother’s love, how would this be fitting?” He grabbed the reins, refusing to let go. Geojin spoke, "How am I a filial son if I see my father die and I survive in shame?" He hit Hapjeol's arm with his sword, charged in, and died in the battle. Hapjeol said, “My masters have died. If I do not die, what shall I do?” He also died in battle. Soldiers eagerly went out and beheaded three thousand enemy heads. The Queen heard about this and shed a lot of tears. She made proper funeral and generously rewarded them.<2>
