Because of your prompt telegram the boat for Haiju was held by Mr. Laporto for one day and I duly arrived here at midnight on Saturday the seventh instant.	박사님의 신속한 전보 덕분에 리포트 씨가 해주로 가는 배를 하루 동안 빌렸습니다. 저는 7일 토요일 자정에 여기에 알맞게 도착했습니다.
On the 8'th although it was Sunday I thought it best to let the governor and the gentlemen sent down to investigate affairs know and called on them, but owing to certain official business the governor came out and asked to be excused but invited me to lunch with him on Monday.	비록 8일은 주일이었지만 제 생각에는 관리와 그 수행원들이 사건을 조사해 알아내도록 내려보내고, 그들을 방문한 것은 잘한 일이었습니다. 그러나 어떤 공적인 일 때문에 관리는 나왔고 양해를 구했으며, 월요일에 자기와 점심을 같이 하도록 저를 초대했습니다.
Mr. Eung Ik was not in and I left my card. yesterday called on both and was well received. hearing that investigation will probably be conducted here I have sent for Mr. Moffett and Mr. Hunt and have told both the governor and Mr. Yi Eung Ik that Mr. Moffett and I	응익 씨는 들어오지 않았고 저는 제 카드를 남겨 놓았습니다. 어제 제가 두 사람을 방문했고, 잘 영접 받았습니다. 아마도 여기에서 수행될 조사에 대한 말을 듣고 저는 마펫 씨와 헌트 씨에게 보냈습니다. 그리고 관리와 이응익 씨 두 사람에게 마펫 씨와 제가 ---것을 말했습니다.
On the presentation of your card Mr. Yi Eung Ik said that he would like very much to have us attend the investigation, but that the French priest had come down after official notification had been made from the French legation to the foreign office in Seoul, that yours was simply a card to him and that much as he regretted it he feared unless we could get an official notification sent from the foreign office he could not accord us the privilege asked. finding that he was firm and would not budge from this, I then produced your letter duly sealed. on seeing this he asked me to translate it, and seemed very much pleased, said that this made it alright and that he would notify us when the investigation was to com off if I would let him know where we were stopping.	당신의 카드를 제시했더니 이응익 씨는 저희가 그 조사에 참여하는 것이 매우 좋겠다고 말하면서, 프랑스 사제는 서울에 있는 프랑스 공사관에서 외[무]부에 공식 통지서를 보낸 후에 내려 왔었다고 말했습니다. 당신의 카드는 그에게는 단순한 카드 한 장에 불과했고, 그는 그것을 매우 유감으로 여겼습니다. 우리가 만일 외[무]부에서 보낸 공식 통지서를 얻을 수 없으면, 그는 우리가 요청한 특권을 우리에게 줄 수 없다며 걱정했습니다. 그가 이 일에 대해 확고 부동하다는 사실을 발견하고, 곧 저는 때에 맞춰 박사님의 봉인된 편지를 내놓았습니다. 이 편지를 보고 그는 제게 편지를 번역해 달라고 요청했는데 매우 만족해하는 것으로 보였고, 이 편지가 그 일을 잘되게 했으며, 우리가 어디에서 머물러 있을 지 제가 그에게 알려만 주면 조사가 끝났을 때 우리에게 통지하겠다고 말했습니다.
I told him that Mr. Moffett was included in that one note and that as soon as he arrived in Haiju he would call.	저는 마펫 씨가 이 사건에 연류되어 있으며 부르면 곧 해주에 도착할 것이라고 말했습니다.
I have taken it for granted that you desire us to be present only when those cases are being investigated in which Christians attached to our American Churches are concerned.	저는 박사님이 이런 사건들에 대한 조사가 진행되는 동안만 출석해달라고 저희에게 요청한 것을 당연하게 생각합니다. 이 조사에는 우리 미국 교회들에 소속된 그리스도인들이 관련되어 있습니다.
There are a number of other things that they claim the priests have been doing and unless you desire it we will absent ourselves from all investigation other than those where we or protestant christians are concerned.	그밖에도 다른 많은 일들이 있습니다. 그들은 사제들이 그 일들을 저질러왔다고 주장했습니다. 만약 당신이 요구하지 않는다면 우리 또는 개신교 그리스도인들이 관련되지 않은 다른 모든 조사에서는 저희들이 스스로 참석하지 않을 것입니다.

Father Wilhelm called on me yesterday and acknowledged that he has hindered and stopped arrests : that he has ordered the arrest of there than christians (R. C.) of police officials etc. etc. and that he has administered punishment such as flogging, imprisonment etc. He excuses it all on the ground that he has fighting with the Governor here for official recognition.	빌헬름 신부가 어제 저를 방문했습니다. 그가 체포를 방해하고 멈추게 했다는 사실을 알았습니다. 그는 포졸들에게 (로마 카톨릭) 그리스도인들보다는 다른 사람들을 체포하라고 명령했습니다. 그리고 그는 채찍질과 투옥 등과 같은 형벌을 집행했습니다. 그는 그 모든 일들을 이곳에 공식적인 조사를 하러온 관리와 싸우던 그 장소에서 자행했습니다.
After a prolonged interview with the Governor and Yi Eung Ik in the presence of Father Doucet(who was sent from Seoul) Father Wilhelm said he would not do so again. Just now however right here in the city the same thing is being enacted.	두셑 신부(그는 서울에서 내려왔습니다)가 지켜보는 가운데 관리와 이응익을 오래 인터뷰 한 후 빌헬름 신부는 다시는 그런 일을 하지 않겠다고 말했습니다. 그러나 바로 지금 여기 그 도시에서 똑같은 일이 자행되고 있습니다.
Word has just come to me that this morning in connection with the investigation, an order was issued for the arrest for trial of certain Roman Catholics, some of them were at the house where the priests are stopping, and the police went there and sent in word that they were wanted. when they did not come out the police went in and opened the door of the room where the priests were and told the men who were there that they were wanted.	방금 저에게 이런 말이 전해졌습니다. 조사가 진행된 오늘 아침, 로마 카톨릭 사람 중 골칫거리를 체포하라는 명령이 떨어졌고, 그들 중 어떤 사람은 사제들이 머물고 있는 집에 있었습니다. 포졸은 그리로 가서 그들이 수배한 사람들을 통보했습니다. 그들이 나오지 않자 포졸이 들어가 사제들이 머물고 있는 곳의 문을 열었고, 그곳에 있는 그들이 수배한 사람들에게 말했습니다.
The priest immediately ordered that the policeman be seized and bound for opening the door where they were and thus entered.	그 사제는 즉시 포졸을 붙잡으라고 명령하고 그들이 있던 곳의 열린 문을 꼭 닫고는 들어가 버렸습니다.
It does seem to me foolhardy for them to continue these tactics. How far you desire this correspondence to be official and how much in detail you desire I done know and would be glad to know what you desire.	이런 술책을 계속하는 것이 그들을 위해서는 무모한 짓으로 제게 보입니다. 당신께서는 이런 서신왕래가 어느 정도 공식적이기를 원하며, 얼마나 자세하기를 원하는지 저는 알고 있습니다. 그리고 당신은 당신이 원하는 것을 기꺼이 알게 될 것입니다.
