광산김씨 재사 및 사당과 향병일기

Kwangsan Kim clan's relics, shrines and hyangbyeong diary

Gwangsan Kim clan’s ancestral hall and shrine, designated as Tangible Cultural Property No. 27 in Gyeongsangbuk-do, are the Jaesa (齋舍, ancestral house) attached to the Jongtaek of Hujodang and Kim Hyo-ro (金孝盧, 1445-1534) and great-grandson Gimhae (金垓, 1555-1592) are enshrined here.

Originally, the shrine was built to commemorate Kim Hyo-ro, a member of the Ocheon-ri, Yean-ri, Andong family.

Even though the Andong Gwangsan Kim clan produced many writers, I would like to find out about Gimhae, a person who was enshrined with Iphyangjo as a bulcheonwi.

If the world is at peace, it is a gentleman to devote himself to Taoism. However, when there is a change in the country, it is a gentleman to pick up a sword and stand up and walk the path of salvation.

This is truly something that can be said about Gimhae.

Gimhae was a bureaucrat who passed Sama City early and served as a member of the clergyman designator and inspecting the ceremonial hall. When the Imjin War broke out while he was living in his hometown, Gimhae worked as a medic in Andong and northern Yeongnam, and wrote 『Hyangbyeong Diary』, a military diary that recorded the battle situation in detail, and 『March Suzy』, a service guide for unit commanders.

By learning about these things, I would like to re-examine the value of Gimhae, a true gentleman who draws his sword in the tribulation of the country.

『향병일기』와 『행군수지』

『Hyangbyeong Diary』 and 『March Balance』

The 『Hyangbyeong Diary』 records, by date, from the news of the invasion of Dongnae Fortress by Japanese invaders on April 14, 1592 to the Battle of Gyerim on June 19, 1593, without a preface or introduction. In other words, it records the battle situation in the form of a diary from the day Gimhae heard the news of the invasion of the Japanese invaders until just before she was surrounded by the Japanese in 1593 and martyred in the military camp of Gyeongju.

As a medical officer in the northern region of Yeongnam, he recorded in detail the battle process and various details of the battles with the Japanese army in Yecheon, Yonggung, Hamchang, etc., with medical soldiers from various villages, as well as the volunteer activities in the northern region of Yeongnam in the early days of the Imjin War.

『March Balance』 discusses the mental attitude of the unit commander, and describes in turn, how to establish a military command, how to select soldiers, how to obtain a horse, supply problem, and unit command. It was also a book that unit commanders must read and learn by revealing how to set up a camp, how to protect a castle, how to search for spies, and how to receive surrender.

『Hyangbyeong Diary』 and 『March Sugi』 are evaluated as documents with outstanding historical and academic value because they can not only give a glimpse of the consciousness and response posture of the military men facing the national crisis of the Imjin War, but also examine the history of local medical soldiers.

군자의 구국정신을 일깨운 김성일의 격문

Kim Seong-il's aphorism that awakened the nobleman's spirit of national salvation

Kim Seong-il (金誠一) from Andong was appointed as Choyusa of Gyeongsang-do and went down to Gyeongsang-do in May 1592 to examine the situation of the war. When he arrived in Hamyang, he wrote a letter of concern for the country and sent it to various regions, and many people were moved by this and became medics.

It was in this context that Gimhae, who lived in Yean, became a medical doctor. Gimhae answered Kim Seong-il's aphorism, "When the king fled from the outbreak of barbarians on the island, the people mourned very much, and living is considered worse than death. Looking back, it seems that it will be difficult to rescue oneself, since in this remote village, only brush and ink are used, and horses are not cooked, so they only hold empty fists. However, with the sincerity of loyalty, he desperately wants revenge, so he swears to heaven and earth and intends to spread his loyalty to subjugating Japanese enemies.” ' and vowed to raise a medic.

Warms written in 『Hyangbyeong Diary』

'Bigyeokjincheonroe (飛格震天雷)' is a type of bomb for killing human beings, so named because it 'makes a sound that vibrates the sky when it explodes when it flies up and hits an enemy', and contains gunpowder and ice iron inside It is a weapon that is loaded and fired at a target by means of a toy.

It was invented by Lee Jang-son during the reign of King Seonjo and was used during the Imjin War. In 『Hyangbyeong Diary』, it is recorded that “there is nothing that beats Bigyeokjincheonroe as a means of subjugating Japanese enemies.”

The Japanese side also accepted Joseon's secret weapon as 'shock and fear'. According to the Japanese record, “Jeonghan Ryak”, “a monster flew from the enemy camp and fell to the ground, and our soldiers were standing around watching it, but suddenly exploded and a sound shook the heavens and earth, and the iron shards were scattered like stardust, killing those who were hit instantly, and those who were not hit fell over. lost,” he said. The psychological pressure felt by the Japanese military was great. Seiho Arima, a Japanese weapons expert, said in 『Joseon Station Sugunsa』, “The igniting device of the Bigyeok Jincheonroe is very clever, and it can be said that it is a groundbreaking advance in chemical engineering.”

『향병일기』, 가학(家學)이 되다

『Hyangbyeong Diary』, becoming a Family studies

Starting with the writing of 『Hyangbyeong Ilgi』 while Gimhae was active as a medical officer during the Imjin War, his son Kim Gwang-gye (1580-1646), who served as a medical officer during the time of Jeong Myo Horan and Byeong Ja Horan, wrote 18 books of Maewon Ilgi for 28 years, and his grandson Kim Yeom (1612–1659) wrote three books of Mukjae Ilgi for five years, and his great-grandson Kim Soon-Eui (1645-1714) wrote six books of Gwaheon Ilgi for 42 years. In addition, Gimhae's younger brother, Kim Ryeong (金坽, 1577-1641) wrote 8 Gyeam Ilroks for 39 years, and Kim Seon's younger brother Kim Seon (1615-1670) wrote 2 Yeoon Diaries for 3 years.

In other words, he recorded a total of 39 diaries for about 120 years over four generations. These diaries included not only hospitality, daily life such as hobbies, family ceremonies such as ceremonial occasions, but also economic activities such as farming, slavery, and land management. It records in detail the society, economy, and culture of Korea at the time, such as management contacts such as the chieftain and children, the relationship between local governments such as tax and return, and local policies, treatment of diseases and diet, so you can know the vivid life. In addition, it is meaningful because it contains the daily lives and worries of the local residents living in a turbulent society, both internally and externally, such as wars and party conflicts.
