Japanese Style Commercial Building of Beonhwa-ro in Mokpo - 1 was built during the Japanese colonial rule of Korea at the corner of an intersection in Beonhwa-ro Mokpo (Bonjeong, currently Daeui-dong), at the point where the former Japanese Consulate building connected with the Oriental Development Company building. The building is registered as having been constructed in 1935. Prior to that, the Mokpo missionary center of the then emerging Japanese religion known as Tenrikyo was located here from 1918 to 1925.
The building is a Japanese-style house that combines commercial and residential functions, also known as a machiya (townhouse). The first floor is a commercial space, the second floor a residential space. The walls of the corners of the building are diagonally aligned to fit the intersection. The store is said to have sold Japanese-made wooden shoes. Until recently it was used as a supermarket.

목포 번화로 일본식 상가주택-1

목포 번화로 일본식 상가 주택-1은 일제 강점기에 가장 번화했던 중심 지역(본정, 현 대의동)의 사거리 모퉁이에 있는 건물이다. 구 일본 영사관 건물과 동양 척식 주식회사 건물로 연결되는 지점에 있다. 건축 연도는 1935년으로 등록되어 있다. 1918년부터 1925년까지 이곳에 당시 일본의 신흥 종교인 천리교(天理敎)의 목포 선교소가 있었다. 이 건물은 상가와 주택이 결합한 일본식 점포 주택인 ‘마치야(町家)’ 형식이다. 1층은 상업 공간이고 2층은 주택으로 사용이 가능한 구조이다. 교차로에 자리한 입지 조건에 맞춰 건물 모서리 벽면 부분이 사선으로 처리되어 있다. 구전에 의하면 이 가게에서는 일본 나막신을 판매했다고 한다. 최근까지 슈퍼마켓으로 사용하였다.

근대기 목포의 대표적 번화가이자 중심거리였던 본정(현재의 번화로)의 사거리 모퉁이에 위치한 점포주택 건물로 근대기 동양척식주식회사 주변 시가지의 흔적과 기억을 담고 있고 해방 이후 상업 경제 공간 요소를 보여주는 건축물이다. 건축형식은 1층은 일본 전통신 게다(下駄)를 판매하는 점포이었고 2층은 주거용 주택을 형성한 일본식 도시점포주택 형식인 마찌야(町家) 형식의 주상복합형 건축물로 모서리 부분 벽면을 45도 방향으로 처리한 점이 특이한 구조이다.
