Former Director’s Residence of the Mokpo-bu Hospital

The Former Director’s Residence of the Mokpo-bu Hospital is a Japanese-style high-class house located diagonally opposite the Mokpo branch of the former Oriental Development Company. Although it was registered as having been constructed in 1935, according to local opinion it was actually built in the 1920s. It was initially owned by Japanese merchant Morita Sensuke, who worked for the Mokpo Shipping Company, the Joseon Oil Manufacture Company, Taepyeong Brewery, and the Korean Distilled Spirits Company, and also served as president of the Jeonnam Fertilizer Company. This house is said to have been used as the official residence of Mokpo City Hospital, which was located just opposite. After Korea's liberation, when the Oriental Development Company building became part of the naval base, the house was used as an official residence of the Navy, and was later owned by a private individual. From 1966, it was owned by Na Sang-su. The house is characterized by a complex roof with Japanese tiles and by a Japanese-style inner garden. In 2006, it was remodeled into a commercial facility based on the original Japanese-style house structure.

구 목포 부립 병원 관사는 구 동양 척식 주식회사 목포 지점과 대각으로 마주 보는 위치에 서 있는 일본식 고급 주택이다. 건축 연도는 1935년으로 등록되어 있으나 구전으로는 1920년대에 지어진 것이라고 한다. 이 집의 최초 소유자는 목포 해운 회사, 조선 제유 회사, 태평 양조, 목포 소주 판매 회사 등에 참여했고, 전남 비료 회사의 대표를 지낸 일본 상인 ‘모리타 센스케(守田千助)’ 이다. 이 집은 이 주택의 맞은편에 있던 목포 부립 병원의 관사로 사용하였다는 설이 있다. 해방 후에는 동양 척식 주식회사 건물이 해군기지가 되면서 해군 관사로 사용하다가 개인 소유가 되었다. 1966년부터는 나상수의 주택이 되었다.
일본 기와로 된 복잡한 지붕 구조가 특징이며, 내부 마당에 일본식 정원이 꾸며져 있다. 2006년에 내부 수리를 한 후에 일본식 주택 구조를 활용한 이색적인 상업 시설로 용도를 바꾸었다.

목포 동양척식주식회사와 사거리의 대각선 방향 건너편에 위치하였던 구 목포부립병원의 원장 관사로 사용되었던 것으로 추정되는 대규모 저택으로 근대기 동양척식주식회사 주변 시가지 및 구 목포부립병원의 흔적과 기억, 당시 상류층 일식주택의 건축형식을 보여주는 건축물이다.
