Old Mokpo Catholic Diocese Office
National Registered Cultural Heritage No. 513
Built in 1937, this building was used as the first Diocese Office of Gwangju Diocese. After the Diocese Office moved to Gwangju in 1956, it was used as a foreign missionary convent of St. Golomban, Sungshun College of Nursing, and Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres.
The structure of the building is symmetrical around the half-circular arch of the front center and the porch decorated with pilaster. The space below the eaves and between floors are decorated with horizontal string courses, and vertical long windows are repeatedly places, and the original shape is well preserved throughout the interior, including wooden stairs and ceilings.
It was turned into the History Museum of the Gwangju Archdiocese in 2017 and is used as an exhibition hall where visitors can see the history of Gwangju Archdiocese's history and the history of Korean Legion of Mary.

After the Building of Catholic Diocese of Gwangju was established in 1937, this Building of Catholic Diocese of Mokpo was used as the first base for missionary works in the Gwangju, Jeollanam-do, and Jeju areas.
The building displays a symmetrical structure with a semicircular arch and a porch with a pilaster at the center.
A horizontal white band runs around the building below the eave and between the floors, while vertical windows are repeatedly arranged on the walls.
The original features of the building’s interior, including the wooden stairs, finishing plaster on the ceiling, and sliding doors, have been well preserved.
In 1956, the building of Catholic Diocese moved to a new location in Gwangju, and the building came to be used as the Mokpo Branch of the Missionary Sisters of St.
Columban, St.
Columban Hospital, and Seongsin Women’s College of Nursing.
It provides invaluable materials about the early history of the Catholic Diocese of Gwangju and the medical missionary works of the Missionary Sisters of St.
Columban.

1937년 건축된 건물로 광주교구 최초의 교구청으로 사용되었다. 1956년 교구청이 광주로 이전한 후에는 성 골롬반 외방 선교수녀원, 성신간호전문대학, 샬트르 성 바오로 수녀회로 사용하였다. 건물의 구조는 정면 중앙부의 반원 아치* 와 필라스터**로 장식된 현관 포치***를 중심으로 대칭을 이루고 있다. 처마선 아래와 층간 사이는 수평 돌림띠로 장식하고 수직의 긴 창을 반복적으로 배치하였으며 내부의 목조 계단과 천장 등 전체적으로 원형이 잘 보존되어 있다.
2017년에 광주대교구 역사박물관으로 조성하여 광주대교구의 역사와 한국 레지오마리애****의 역사를 한 눈에 볼 수 있는 전시관으로 활용하고 있다.
- 아치 : 양 끝에 베푼 기초나 기둥 위에 들 벽 콘크리트 등을 곡선형으로 쌓아 우린 것
- 필라스터 : 벽기둥, 벽체에 부착한 이은 기둥 모양을 한 것
- 포치 : 건물의 현관 또는 입구의 바깥쪽에 튀어나와 지붕으로 덮인 부분
- 레지오마리애 : 가문릭교회의 평신도 신앙 공동체로서 교회 복지에 유익하다고 판단되는 모든 형태의 사회봉사와 가릭 활동을 전개한 조직

1937년 광주지목구가 설립된 후 최초로 광주·전남지역(그 당시는 제주지역 포함) 선교를 위한 거점으로 사용된 건물로, 정면 중앙부의 반원아치와 필라스터(pilaster)로 장식된 현관 포치를 중심으로 대칭을 이루고 있고, 처마선 아래와 층간 사이에 수평 돌림띠로 장식하고 수직의 긴창을 반복적으로 배치하였으며, 내부의 목조계단·천장의 석고 플라스터(plaster) 몰딩·행거 미서기 문 등 전체적으로 원형이 잘 보존되어 있다.
1956년 교구청이 광주로 이전한 후 성 골롬반외방선교수녀회 수녀원 목포분원과 성 골롬반 병원 및 성신간호전문대학으로 사용되는 등 천주교 광주대교구의 초기역사와 성 골롬반외방전교회의 의료 선교의 역사를 알 수 있는 장소로 가치가 있다.
