Mokpo Yangdong Church

This building is the main hall of Yangdong Church, the first church in Mokpo, founded by Eugene Bell, a missionary of the Southern Presbyterian Church of the U.S. In 1897, missionaries who came with the opening of Mokpo and believers set up a tent under the name of “Mokpo Church” and started worship services. As the number of believers increased significantly, Yangdong Church was constructed with stones carried directly from Yudalsan Mountain by believers.
One upper arch on the side of the building has an inscription in Chinese characters, saying “The 4th Year of Daehan Yoonghee,” along with a Taegeuk pattern in the middle, and the other upper arch has an inscription, saying “Jugangseong 1910” in Korean. It is said that male believers entered the arch with the Chinese inscription and female believers entered the other arch with the Korean inscription. These are valuable architectural materials that show early Korean churches.
The main hall has a simple rectangular structure that used tuff and the inside has an auditorium-shaped structure. In 1982, a four-story bell tower was installed in the center of the front, transforming it into what it is today. The roof was originally a gambler roof with a wooden tress structure, but it was changed to a gable roof during the expansion of the bell tower.
Thus church led the April 8 Independence Movement in Mokpo in 1919. It is a historic landmark site where citizens took part in the independence campaign with the bell sound of the outdoor wooden bell tower as a signal during the Japanese occupation.

MOKPO YANGDONG CHURCH
The congregation now known as Mokpo Yangdong Church was founded in 1897 by Presbyterian missionary Eugene Bell as the first Protestant church in Jeolla Province. The church was devoted to founding various mission institutes, including schools, the first modern hospital, and an orphanage.
It is notable that the church was at the forefront of the People’s Movements for Independence, such as the March 1 Independence Movement in 1919. The 8th senior pastor of the church, Rev. Park Yeonse, died a martyr while resisting the colonial worship a year before the National Liberation in 1945.
To honor the historic contribution of the congregation, the church building was designated as a National Memorial Facility. At the 103rd General Assembly, the Presbyterian Church in the Republic of Korea (PROK) recognized it as a Memorial Church in gratitude for the legacy of faithful witness of the congregation.

This is where the March 1st Movement in Mokpo on April 8, 1919 was planned and an independence demonstration was led.
When the March 1st Movement occurred in 1919, the members of Yangdong Church prepared for the independence demonstration and made taegeukgi, the national flag, and leaflets together with Yeongheung School students and Jeongmyeong Girls’ School students.
They decided to let the students at Mokpo Commercial School and Mokpo Public School participate in the demonstration. Sharing their duties respectively, they planned to hold mass demonstrations simultaneously in downtown Mokpo.
On April 8, the members of Yangdong Church took the lead together with students, hold flags saying, “Long live Korean independence!”. On that day, many church members and students were arrested b the Japanese police officers and suffered hardship.

In 1897, missionaries and believers set up a tent and began praying together.
Since then, the church building was established with the efforts of devoted Christians.
The Christians collected stones themselves from Yudalsan Mountain and used them as main materials for the church construction.
Taegeuk pattern is engraved above the left door at the entrance, giving the church a unique character.

목포 양동교회
木浦 陽洞敎會

이 건물은 미국 남 장로교 선교사 유진 벨이 세운 목포 지역 최초 교회인 양동 교회의 본당이다. 1897년 목포 개항과 함께 들어온 선교사와 신도들이 '목포 교회' 란 이름으로 천막을 치고 예배를 시작하였다. 이후 신자 수가 크게 늘어나자 교인들이 유달산에서 직접 운반한 석재를 주재료로 양동 교회를 축조하였다.
건물 측면의 한쪽 상부 아치에는 가운데 태극 무늬와 함께 한자로 '대한융희사년 大韓隆熙四年’, 다른 쪽 상부 아치에는 한글로 '주강성일천구백십년 이라고 음각한 글이 있다. 한자로 쓴 쪽은 남성 신도, 한글로 쓴 쪽은 여성 신도가 출입했다고 한다. 이러한 것은 초창기 한국 교회의 모습을 볼 수 있는 귀중한 건축 자료이다.
본당은 응회암을 사용한 단순 장방형 구조이며, 내부는 강당형으로 되어 있다. 1982년 전면 중앙에 4층 구조의 종탑부를 설치하며 현재의 모습으로 변형하였다. 지붕은 본래 목조 트러스* 구조의 팔작지붕이었으나 종탑부 증축 과정에서 박공* 지붕으로 변경하였다.
이 교회는 1919년 목포에서 일어난 4·8 독립 만세 운동을 주도하였다. 일제 강점기에 옥외에 별도로 세워져 있는 목조 종탑의 종소리를 신호로 시민들이 만세 운동에 참여했다는 기념비적인 유적이다.

목포양동교회
목포양동교회는 미국남장로회 선교사 유진벨에 의해 1897년 전남 . 광주 지역에 개신교 첫 교회로 설립되었다. 교회는 영흥학교, 정명여 학교 등의 교육선교, 목포 최초의 근대병원인 프렌치병원을 통한 의료 선교, 그리고 고아들을 위한 공생원 등의 다양한 선교기관을 설립하여 지역사회를 위해 헌신적으로 봉사하여왔다.
일제 강점기 독립운동에 주도적으로 참여하였으며, 제8대 박연세 담 임목사는 신사참배 강요에 항거하다 해방 한 해 전에 순교하였다. 1910년에 건축한 본 교회당은 국가보훈처의 현충 시설로 지정되고, 등록문화재 제114호로 등재되었다.
한국기독교장로회 총회(제103회, 2018)는 목포양동교회의 신앙적 증 언의 유산을 기리고 보존하기 위해 “총회 유적교회”로 지정하였다.

1919년 4월 8일 목포의 3・1운동을 계획하고 만세시위를 이끌었던 곳이다.
1919년 3・1운동이 일어나자 양동교회 교인들은 영흥학교・정명여학교 학생들과 태극기와 전단을 제작하며 만세시위를 준비하였다. 목포상업학교와 목포공립보통학교 학생들도 참여시키기로 하고 각각 임무를 분담한 뒤, 목포 시내에서 동시다발적으로 만세시위를 일으키기로 계획하였다.
4월 8일 양동교회 교인들은 학생들과 함께 '대한독립만세'라고 쓴 깃발을 들고 앞장섰다. 이날의 만세시위로 수많은 교인들과 학생들이 일제 경찰에 붙잡혀 시련을 겪었다.

이 건물은 미국 남장로교의 선교사 유진벨(Rev. Eugene Bell, 한국어 이름: 배유지)이 목포 지역 최초의 교회로 설립하였던 양동교회의 본당이다. 양동교회는 1897년 선교사들과 신도들이 천막을 치고 예배를 드린 것이 시초가 되어, 교인들의 노력으로 건립되었다. 교인들이 유달산에서 직접 날라 온 석재를 주재료로 축조하였으며, 특이하게 왼쪽 출입문 위쪽에 태극무늬가 새겨져 있다.
