Lee Hun-dong Garden
Jeollanam-do Cultural Heritage Material No. 165
This garden is a Japanese style garden which was made by Uchidani Manpei, a Japanese who was active in Mokpo in the 1930s.
It consists of an entrance garden, a courtyard garden, a Imcheon garden, and a back garden. It is the largest private garden in the Honam region. There are 113 types of trees in the garden, including 37 Korean wild species, 39 Japanese native species, 25 Chinese native species, and 12 others, of which 69 species of evergreen trees account for 61% of the total. Among the trees, it is said that a pair of native Japanese male and female juniper trees in front of the porch were not planted by humans, but that the juniper seeds flew to Mokpo during the volcanic eruption in Japan and sprouted.
It is a place you can look at the mansion and garden constructed during the Japanese occupation, and currently the inside of the mansion coverted to a Korean style living room and a Western style reception room, but the outside preserves the Japanese style appearance. Over time, the entrance and front yard were transformed, but most of the garden has been preserved in its original form during the initial construction period, making it an important source of information for landscape culture. This garden is a popular tourist attraction in Mokpo as well as a filming spot for dramas and movies such as "Sandglass" and "The Age of Wild Men."
After Korea's liberation from Japan's colonial rule, it was managed by the Navy military police and then handed over to PArk Ki-bae, a member of the Haenam National Assemble, and in the 1950s, Lee Hoon-dong, chairman of the Joseon Naehwa, a local company in Mokpo, purchased it.

이훈동정원
李勳東庭園

이 정원은 원래 1930년대에 목포에서 활동한 일본인 우치다니 만페이(內谷平)가 만든 일본식 정원이다.
입구 정원, 안뜰 정원, 임천(林泉)정원, 후원으로 이루어져 있다. 호남 지방에서 가장 규모가 큰 개인 정원이다. 정원에 있는 나무의 종류는 113여 종인데, 한국 야생종 37종, 일본 원산 종 39종, 중국 원산 총 25종, 기타 12종이며, 이중에서 상록수는 69종으로 전체의 61%이다. 정원수 중에서 현관 앞에 있는 일본 원산 향나무 암수 한 쌍은 사람이 심은 것이 아니라 일본의 화산 폭발 때에 향나무 씨가 목포까지 날아와서 싹을 틔운 것이라고 전해지고 있다. 일제 강점기에 조성한 저택과 정원의 모습을 살펴볼 수 있는 장소인데, 현재 저택 내부는 한국식 거실과 서양식 응접실로 개조되었지만 외형은 일본식 모습을 유지하고 있다. 시간이 흐르면서 입구 부분과 앞뜰 부분이 변형되었지만, 정원의 모습은 대부분 조성 시기의 원형을 유지하고 있어서 조경 문화 부분에 중요한 자료가 되고 있다. 이 정원은 '모래시계', '야인시대' 등 드라마나 영화 촬영 명소이자 목포의 대표적인 관광 명소로 각광 받고 있다. 광복 후에 해군 헌병대에서 관리하다가 해남 출신의 국회의원 박기배 씨에게 넘어갔다가 1950년대에 목포의 향토 기업인 조선내화의 이훈동 회장이 매입하여 오늘에 이르고 있다.

1930년대에 일본인 내곡만평(內谷萬平)이 지은 정원으로, 우리나라의 서원양식으로 꾸며 놓았다.
입구정원·안뜰정원·임천정원·후원으로 이루어져 있으며, 일본식 석등과 일본식 석탑이 배치되어 있어 일본식 정원의 분위기가 물씬 풍긴다.
입구정원에는 향나무·종려나무·얼룩식나무·다매화·은테사철나무·모과나무·배롱나무·사스끼철쭉 등을 심고, 안뜰정원에는 잔디로 마당을 만들어 후박나무와 후파향나무·종가시나무 등을 심어놓았다. 임천정원에는 히말라야시이다·주목·삼나무·편백나무·종가시·위성류·다매화 등을 빈틈없이 심었는데, 수풀 속으로 좁다란 시냇물이 흐른다. 후원은 언덕 위의 평편한 잔디마당을 중심으로 그 위쪽과 아래쪽에 갖가지 나무들을 심어 놓았다.
