From its origins in the early modern era to today, the humanities has been, in part, a collective effort by scholars and others to discover, edit, archive, interpret, and understand out cultural heritage as it has been transmitted--which is to say in the forms of inherited material objects, stone tools, runes, artifacts and works of art, manuscripts and books, new media and software.
