Dr.john CrawFurd, the second Resident of Singapore, was the one who made Singapore a British possession. He signed a treaty with Sultan Hussein on 2 Auguest 1824 in which the Sultan and the Temenggong handed over the whole island to the British East India Company in return for the payment of larger sums of money than what they had previously received.

large number of chinese came as unskilled labour, working at the docks and construction sites. they were called coolies. the indians also worekd as labourers carryng gargoes at the docks, as can be seen in he picture. What kind of life do you think these labourers led?

Singapore has no natural resources, everything that today makes lige bearable and hopeful for us was a result of the hard work and sacrifice of these early immigrants.

Asians were ofen discriminated by the British government. For example, in the government service, most of the high-ranking officials were Europeans and well-qualified Asians were not given senior or impotant posts. Some Asian doctor educated in British universities were as well qualified as the British doctors, but the government woudl not allow then to hold senior posts in the hospitals.

Despite these restrictions imposed by the British, Singarpore fared well under British rule. There was order, security and General improvements to the people's standard of living. However, British rule did not last long. It was briefly disrupted by Japnaese Occupation.
