This gate was the main entrance to the provincial military headquarters in Cheongju. The military headquarters served as the central command of all the military forces in the Chungcheong-do area. Due the rising need for inland defense following various invasions in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, the headquarters was moved to the present location in 1651 from Haemi, a city near the west coast. The structure is typical of a military headquarters entrance gate in the late period of the Joseon Dynasty (1932-1910).
