It is unknown when this pagoda was built''', but it has a characteristic for the Baekje period (18 BCE–660 CE) design which was based on the stone pagoda(s) located at the Mireuksa Temple Site*. The pagoda consists of a base, five sets of body and roof stones, and a decorative top. The roof stones are thin and wide and propped up with three-tiered supports. The pagoda was disassembled and renovated in 1965-1966. During the renovation, a number of artifacts (National Treasure No. 123) were found in the middle of the bottom roof stone and inside the base, including a set of gold plates engraved with chapter 19 of the Diamond Sutra, gilt bronze reliquary, and a glass reliquary. Also, a rammed earth foundation measuring 16.8 x 12.7 m was found underneath the pagoda, which suggests that a wooden pagoda could have been built here before. Roof tiles dating back to the Unified Silla period were also found around the pagoda. They bear various inscriptions, such as Wanggungsa Temple, Gwangungsa Temple, Daegwanwansa Temple, Daegwangungsa Temple, which is why there is still an ongoing debate on whether the pagoda was built during the Baekje period, Unified Silla period (666-935), or the Goryeo period (918-1392).
