해설문
국문
석축 해자란 돌을 쌓아 만든 해자를 말한다. 이 석축 해자는 월성 북측의 해자들 중 가장 먼저 발굴되었다. 이 해자의 최대 변은 51.1m이며 최대 폭은 25m이다. 성벽과 맞닿은 곳은 지형에 맞게 곡선을 이루고 있으나, 바깥쪽은 ‘ㄱ’ 자 모양이다. 그러나 세 번 고쳐 지으면서 ‘ㄱ’의 모서리 부분이 점차 곡선으로 변하고 규모도 작아졌다. 월성 동쪽에 치우쳐 있어 동궁과 월지 유적에 가까우며, 돌을 쌓은 방식 또한 월지의 방식과 유사하다. 따라서 동궁과 월지가 만들어질 무렵 이 석축 해자도 세워졌을 것으로 추정된다. 이 석축 해자는 가장 먼저 복원되었으며, 처음부터 담수 해자*로 정비되었다.

Embanked Moat (Wolseong Palace Site, Gyeongju)
Embanked Moat is one of the seven moats located along the northern border of the palace site. Situated at the easternmost end of the site, it was the first moat of the palace to be excavated. The moat measures up to 51.1 m in length and up to 25 m in width. Its bent boomerang-like shape was designed to repeat the curve of the palace wall to which it was adjacent. The outer line of the embankment was originally L-shaped with a sharper corner. As the moat underwent three series of alternations, its overall size was reduced, and the outer corner gradually smoothed out. Located on the eastern end of Wolseong Palace, this moat was also in close proximity to Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond. Indeed, the masonry style of its embankment demonstrates similarities with that of Wolji Pond. It suggests that this moat* was constructed around the same time as Donggung Palace and its pond. This moat was the first to undergo reconstruction in the 2010s and (unlike Moats no. 5 and 6)* was filled with water from the beginning.
