서천 마량리 동백나무 숲은 500년 이상된 동백나무 85그루가 자생하고 있는 곳이자 마을의 평안을 기원하는 곳이다.

예부터 내려오는 이야기에 따르면 약 500년 전에 마량진 수군첨사*가 바다 위에 수많은 꽃이 떠 있는 꿈을 꾸었는데, 그 꽃을 가져다 잘 가꾸면 어부들이 안전하게 고기를 잡을 수 있고 마을도 번성할 것이라는 말을 들었다고 한다. 꿈에서 깬 후에 바닷가에 가보니 실제로 꽃이 있어서, 그 꽃을 심어 지금의 동백나무 숲이 되었다고 한다. 그 후로 마을 사람들은 해마다 음력 1월이 되면 이곳에서 제사를 지내며 고기도 많이 잡고 마을도 평안하게 지낼 수 있기를 빌고 있다.

서천 마량리 동백나무 숲은 우리나라에서 보기 드문 동백나무 숲으로 늦겨울에 꽃봉오리가 올라오기 시작하여 늦은 봄까지 붉은 꽃이 활짝 핀다. 꽃잎이 5장인 토종으로 꽃 하나가 통째로 지는 특징이 있는데 그 모습이 산꼭대기에 있는 동백정과 어우러져 아름다움을 한껏 자아낸다.

Forest of Common Camellias in Maryang-ri, Seocheon

Common camellia (Camellia japonica L.) is an evergreen broadleaf tree in the family Theaceae. It is sometimes called the “rose of winter” as its flowers bloom from November to April. In Korean, it is also known as haehonghwa, meaning “red flowers by the sea.”

This forest includes about 85 common camellia trees which are more than 500 years old. Usually, common camellia flowers have six to seven petals, but the trees here are native to Korea, and the flowers bloom with five petals. When the flowers wither, the entire flower falls from the stem in one piece.

According to a legend, about 500 years ago, a local navy official had a dream in which he saw numerous flowers floating on the sea. In his dream, he was told that taking good care of the flowers would guarantee the safe fishing of the local residents and bring the village prosperity. After he woke up, he went to the shore and found the flowers. He planted them, and they became this common camellia forest. Since then, local residents hold an annual ritual in the first lunar month, praying for the well-being of the village and safe and bountiful fishing.

On the top of the hill is a pavilion named Dongbaekjeong, meaning “pavilion of common camellia,” and it creates picturesque landscape with the forest.

동백나무는 차나무과에 속하는 상록활엽교목이다. 겨울에 꽃이 피기 때문에 rose of winter 라고도 불리고, 한국에서는 바닷가에서 피는 붉은 꽃이라 하여 ‘해홍화’라고도 불린다.

이 숲은 수령이 500년 이상 된 동백나무 85그루가 자생하고 있는 곳이다. 동백나무의 꽃잎은 보통 6-7장이지만, 이곳의 동백나무는 꽃잎이 5장인 토종이다. 꽃이 질 때는 꽃 하나가 통째로 가지에서 떨어진다.
