This pavilion houses a stele to commemorate the matrimonial devotion of Lady Kang, the wife of Gwon Taek. During the Joseon period (1392-1910), Commemorative plaques or steles were bestowed by the king to honor a person's patriotic loyalty, filial devotion, or matrimonial devotion and were meant to be hung on red gates or in pavilions in front of the honored family's home.

Lady Kang belonged to the Jinyang Kang clan. During the Japanese invasions of 1597-1598, Japanese troops who had invaded the village tried to rape Lady Kang. She fought back but ultimately committed suicide to protect her chastity and remain faithful to her husband.

해설문

국문

정려각이란 충신·효자·열녀 등의 훌륭한 업적을 표창하기 위해 지은 건물이다. 산청 진양강씨 정려각은 정유재란(1597) 때 왜적에 맞선 권택의 아내 진양 강씨의 절의를 기리기 위해 지었다. 조선 선조 34년(1601)에 배양마을 앞에 세웠다가 숙종 14년(1688)에 지금의 위치로 옮겼다.

진양강씨 정려각에는 ‘선무랑권택처절부진양강씨지려(宣務郞權澤妻節婦晋陽姜氏之閭)’라고 새긴 비석이 있다. 건물은 앞면 1칸, 옆면 1칸 규모로 부재들이 단단하게 연결되어 정려각의 일반적인 구성형식을 따른다. 지붕 아래 나무 구조물에는 연꽃이나 봉황의 머리를 새겨 넣어 화려하게 장식하였다.

영문 해설 내용

이 정려각은 조선시대의 인물인 부인 강씨의 절의를 기리기 위해 세워졌다. 1597년 정유재란 때 마을에 쳐들어온 왜적이 강씨를 범하려 하자, 강씨는 왜적에 맞서 싸우다 자결하였다.

1601년 강씨의 절의를 기리는 정려가 내려지고, 지금의 사월리 배양마을 앞에 정려각이 세워졌다. 1688년 정려각을 지금의 위치로 옮겼으며, 현재의 건물은 1927년에 세운 것이다. 정려각 안에는 '권택의 처 절부 강씨의 정려'라고 새긴 비석이 있다. 지붕을 받친 공포는 연꽃 봉오리와 봉황 머리 모양으로 화려하게 장식하였다.
