암문은 일종의 비밀 통로로 적이 관측하기 어려운 곳에 설치된다. 남한산성에는 모두 16개의 암문이 있는데 본성에 11개, 봉암성에 4개, 한봉성에 1개가 설치되어 있다.
남단사지 암문은 제2남옹성과 제3남옹성 사이에 위치하며, 경기도 광주시 검복리 방면과 연결된다. 암문 안쪽은 평거식(직사각형)이고 바깥쪽은 홍예식(아치형)이다.

A secret entrance (ammun) was an emergency passage that allowed for the undetected movement of forces into and out of the fortress.
