해설문

국문

나주 불회사 소조 보살 입상은 불회사 대웅전 삼존 불상 중 중심 불인 비로자나불 오른쪽에 서 있는 보현보살 소조불이다. 이 소조 보살 입상은 나무로 뼈대를 만들고 그 위에 흙을 올린 뒤에 옻을 여러 번 칠하고, 여기에 다시 금을 붙이고 칠하여 완성한 것이다. 조선 초기에 제작한 것으로 보인다.

유별나게 아랫배가 나온 인간적인 부처의 모습과 단순화한 선, 훤칠한 체구, 화려한 보관이 특징이다.

영문

Clay Standing Bodhisattvas of Bulhoesa Temple, Naju

The two standing attendant bodhisattvas flanking Dry-lacquered (Seated?) Vairocana Buddha* (Treasure No. 1545), the principal Buddha of Bulhoesa Temple's Daeungjeon Hall, each appear to be Manjusri (Bodhisattva of Wisdom and Insight) and Samantabhadra (Bodhisattva of Great Conduct).

The two statues are presumed to have been made around the 15th century during the Joseon period (1392-1910). After the shape was built by making a wood frame covered with clay atop of it, it was adorned with lacquer several times and from here, it was again adorned with glued gold and completed. All two statues wear splendid jewelled crowns, have bodies disproportionally bulky compared to the small faces, and stand with protruding stomachs.

• The original name of the statue in its own text is 건칠비로자나불좌상, and here "좌" is missing, so I am not sure if it corresponds to "seated" and needs to be removed, or is it just a mistake/ irrelevant?

영문 해설 내용

불회사 대웅전의 본존불인 건칠비로자나불상(보물 제1545호) 양옆에 서 있는 협시보살상 2구로, 각각 문수보살과 보현보살을 나타낸다.

두 상은 조선시대인 15세기 무렵에 만들어진 것으로 추정된다. 나무로 뼈대를 만들고 그 위에 흙을 올려 모양을 완성한 뒤, 옻을 여러 번 칠하고 여기에 다시 금을 붙이고 칠하여 완성하였다. 두 보살 모두 화려한 보관을 쓰고 있고, 작은 얼굴에 비해 신체는 건장하며, 배를 내밀고 서 있다.
