A fort, called ''jin'' in Korean, was a military base where the command of a local army was stationed. The area around Ganghwado Island has been a strategic military defense location for over a millennia, as it is located at the mouth of two rivers which pass by the former capitals of the Goryeo (918-1392) and Joseon (1392-1910) dynasties. During the Joseon period, a number of forts were built on and nearby Ganghwado Island.
