'''Site of the Tomb of Yi Byeok'''

This is the tomb of Yi Byeok (1754~1785), a Confucian scholar and one of the few early Korean Catholics of the late Joseon dynasty (1392-1910).
+
This is the original site of the tomb Yi Byeok (1754-1785; baptismal name: Yohan), a Confucian scholar and one of the first Korean Catholic believers. Yi was discovered buried here in the 1970s, and his body was relocated in 1979 to Cheonjinam in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do, the birthplace of Korean Catholicism. The tomb mound and stele were later added to mark the site.

Yi Byeok was from a military family and became attracted to Catholicism when it was introduced to Joseon Korea. He had a close relationship with other Confucian scholars who studied Catholic faith such as Jeong Yakyong (1762~1836) and Yi Seunghun (1756~1801), and organized mass gatherings. When Yi Seunghun went to China in 1784 and was baptized, Yi was also baptized by him. Yi Byeok failed in his attempt to compromise Catholic and Confucian morals and beliefs and was eventually martyred.
+
Yi Byeok was born in Hwahyeon-ri, Pocheon. He was from a family of renowned military officials. He studied neo-Confucianism in his youth, but was critical of its hypocrisy, and he became attracted to Western teachings including Catholicism. He was influential in introducing Catholicism to other Confucian scholars such as Jeong Yak-yong (1762-1836) and Yi Seung-hun (1756-1801), and often led study and worship gatherings. In 1783, Yi Seung-hun was baptized in China, thus becoming the first official Korean believer. When he returned to Korea the following year, he baptized others including Yi Byeok. However, early in 1785, Yi Byeok and others were found by government authorities during a Catholic ceremony, and they were sent home and warned not to continue. Yi Byeok's parents strongly opposed his Catholicism, and he was pressured to stay at home and serve his parents according to their Confucian beliefs. He died shortly thereafter, either from the plague or through self-starvation, according to differing accounts.

The tomb of Yi Byeok was discovered in late 1970 and moved to Cheonjinam, the birthplace of Korean Catholicism. The present tomb is new. Of the original only the tomb mound and a stele remain.
