해설문
국문
사찰에서 의례나 행사가 있을 때 입구에 내거는 깃발을 당(幢), 깃대를 당간(幢竿), 당간을 지탱해주는 지지대를 당간지주(幢竿支柱)라고 한다.
망덕사지의 당간지주는 아무런 장식이 없고 바깥면 양 모서리를 중간쯤에서부터 위로 모를 죽였다. 맨 위쪽 끝에 네모나게 홈이 있어 당간을 고정시키는 장치를 설치했음을 알 수 있다.
망덕사는 신문왕 5년(685)에 창건되었다고 한다. 신라가 부처의 힘으로 당나라의 외침을 막고자 사천왕사(四天王寺)를 지을 때 당나라의 의심을 피하고자 급히 지은 새 절이 망덕사이다.

Flagpole supports are a pair of stone pillars set up to support a flagpole which was used to mark Buddhist temple precincts by hanging flags or to celebrate special events and large gatherings by hanging banners.
These flagpole supports are located on the western side of the site of Mangdeoksa Temple, which is said to have been founded in 685/692 during the Unified Silla period (668-935).
