해설문
국문
경주 대릉원 일원의 고분군 가운데 황오동 지역에 분포하는 고분들이다. 대릉원 일원으로 통합되기 전에는 사적 제41호 황오리고분군이었다. 유적을 가로지른 원화로에 의해 동·서쪽으로 분리되었는데, 서쪽은 쪽샘지구에 해당한다.
이곳은 일제강점기에 50여기의 고분이 알려졌지만, 대부분 유실·훼손되고 9기만이 봉분을 유지하고 있었다. 그 후 도로 확장 등 도시 개발 과정에서 수 백 기에 달하는 고분들이 확인되었다. 지금도 쪽샘지구에서 많은 고분이 확인되거나 발굴조사되고 있다.
발굴된 고분을 보면 큰 것은 돌무지덧널무덤[적석목곽분, 積石木槨墳]이 대부분이고 크기가 작은 경우에는 구덩식돌덧널무덤[수혈식석곽묘, 竪穴式石槨墓]이나 독무덤[옹관묘, 甕棺墓]이다. 그리고 이들보다 시기가 빠른 4세기 이전에 만들어진 덧널무덤[목곽묘, 木槨墓]도 다수가 확인되었기 때문에 신라 무덤의 변화, 발전 과정을 알 수 있다.
