해설문

국문

고대섭(1911~1978)은 본관이 제주이며 강화에서 출생하였고 정미소와 양조장, 직조 공장 등을 운영하였다. 그는 1936년경 개성에서 인삼기술자를 초빙하고 인삼 농사를 시작하여 강화에 고려인삼을 처음으로 도입하고 부흥시킨 인물로 평가받고 있다.

1930년대 후반 사업차 개성을 방문했다가 개성 근교의 부잣집을 방문했는데 이때 본 집이 마음에 들어서 그 모양 그대로 강화 솔정리에 한옥을 지었다고 한다. 인사동에서 설계를 마친 후 1939년부터 3년간 터를 다지고 1942년부터 목공사에 들어갔다. 상량*을 올린 것이 1944년으로 집을 짓는 기간만 총 5년이 소요되었다.

강화 고대섭 가옥은 당시 최신의 건축재료와 근대적 건축 기법을 사용하여 조성하였다는 특징이 있다. 또한 가옥의 배치를 보면 외곽 담장이 본채(안채, 사랑채)와 별채, 곳간, 장독대 등을 감싸고 있다. 가옥의 남동쪽 모서리에는 정미소 건물이 있었다고 전해지는데 현재는 남아 있지 않다.
